While walking in Pittman Wash, have you seen killdeers as they are walking away from you, with their familiar calls, attracting your attention? How about if they are acting like they are injured? If so, there may be a nest nearby. Do you know what killdeer nests look like?
Killdeer nests are generally a slight depression on gravels or in areas with little vegetation adjacent to streambeds, laying flat on the ground. The eggs are mottled to look like gravel (do you see four eggs in the photo?) If you see killdeers trying to attract your attention, they are likely wanting to lead you away from a nest. Please pay attention when walking near the streambed.
